GP Surgery Extension and Refurbishment

This sympathetic refurbishment and extension of an existing healthcare facility provides accommodation for the existing GP practice together with support staff and other community based healthcare services.

The Practice and PCT services had outgrown the existing surgery with its single storey traditional construction and constrained plot. However planners were resistant to radical options for refurbishment and there was little prospect for a temporary local relocation.

Managing a complex build or refurbishment alongside clinical services is always a challenge. Our design team solution combined horizontal and vertical extensions with a total refurbishment whilst our project programme minimised disruption and enabled continuous occupation throughout the build. The construction works were phased to allow part of the building to remain occupied, a rotation of clinical services were managed around the build and two storey temporary accommodation was provided with covered links into the existing building.

The end result was a space so improved that some patients thought it had been rebuilt completely. Dark and claustrophobic waiting areas were replaced by a light and airy atrium. Uninspiring angular forms replaced with gentle curves and subtle decorative features. Despite the obvious compromises of a refurbishment, performance and efficiency were also significantly improved.
