Community Healthy Living Centre, Thetford, Norfolk
Integrated Health Centre

This 2,200m² integrated centre incorporates a GP Practice; child development and specialist community services; rehabilitation; dentistry; podiatry; minor surgery; outpatient clinics; diagnostics (including digital x-ray); community mental health services.

At the time of its delivery it ranked as one of the lowest in terms of cost per m² of any LIFT building and was a runner up in the National LIFT Awards in the Value for Money category. The Centre is cited as an exemplar for community engagement by Community Health Partnerships and has been quoted by CABE as a design exemplar at an NHS Confederation Conference.

South facing walls are constructed of a translucent material which captures and draws light and warmth from the sun through the building via two large funnel shaped atrium areas. These are capped with a material known as ETFE (the main construction element of the 'biomes' at the Eden Project). Other walls are clad in European Redwood which is untreated, sustainable and durable.

The clinical services were completely redesigned to work around patient need leading to unplanned services being clustered around the main entrance, appointment services around the second waiting atrium and administrative areas on the first floor.
